Welcome back to the Hillside Commons Blog! We hope you’ve had a great start to a new year here in Oneonta, NY. Today, we have some extra ideas for how you can make life better for you and others around your apartment: celebrate Women’s History Month! Try some of these ideas to be more conscious of and grateful for the women in your life, this month and always.

Learn about women in history.

Women haven’t always gotten much of the limelight when it comes to history. History is complicated, but you can start learning more about remarkable women by reading stories. We suggest starting with Bad Girls Throughout History: 100 Remarkable Women Who Changed the World by Ann Shen. If you don’t have time for reading, or if you’re not much of a reader, watch a documentary! Jackie: A Tale of Two Sisters and Iris are both informative, interesting documentaries on Netflix that highlight two notable women in recent history.

Take note of women today.

The world is full of amazing women everyone can learn from, notice, and support. It probably won’t take you much effort to find someone like this in your life. Find a way to thank a woman for something great they’ve done, to genuinely compliment someone on an inspiring trait or habit, and to appreciate people for who they are. Look outside of your inner circle so you can appreciate the good all people do — not just the things women close to you do for you.

Support a cause helping women and girls.

Plenty of individuals and organizations are trying to make the world a better place. See what you can do to offer support to people involved in these causes, whether you do so by getting involved in working with an organization or you choose to donate your own money or skills. Find potential charities and non-profits benefiting women and girls at Charity Navigator’s extensive list.
