Hillside Commons Blog, Oneonta, NY Make stress-relieving, relaxation habits part of your routine by trying some of these tips this Stress Awareness Month.

April is Stress Awareness Month, and here at Hillside Commons, we are bringing some awareness to that fact! Life is stressful and sometimes full of despair, but you can relax in your apartment or elsewhere in or out of Oneonta, NY by doing what works for you. Try these simple but hopefully impactful ideas in your life this month.

Practice meditation. Meditation is a great way to let go of stress and worries. Spend a few minutes breathing and noticing your thoughts, but choosing to keep your attention on your breath. Use Headspace if you’ve never practiced meditation before. It’s a great way to stay better aware of and learn to control your thoughts, emotions, and physical reactions to them.

Exercise. This may be one of your ongoing goals, and we think there’s no time quite like the present to push yourself to simply start. So get your heart pumping in the best way by trying a new exercise routine or doing something you know you like. This can help you to let go of worries and help you to feel more control over your life. It doesn’t matter what form of exercise you choose. There will be benefits to simply doing!

Do something creative. Creativity can help you to let go of worries and daily concerns, or at least to give you an artistic and emotional outlet you’ll value long-term. A daily practice of being creative will reap benefits, so try something you’ve always wanted to try. Whether that be painting, reading, taking up photography, or knitting, you can find fulfillment that gives you something new and relaxing to enjoy, now and in the future.

Journal. Journaling has plenty of benefits, so start keeping a journal! Stay aware of your mental and emotional health by writing down what things are troubling you and how you’re dealing with them. Practice looking on the bright side by journaling the things you’re grateful for, the things you are proud of about yourself, and the moments in life you want to remember. Be real with yourself, so write or take note of less “positive” things, like your struggles and what you learn from them. Writing down even a line or two a day can make a big difference in shifting your mindset to a more generous one, which can alleviate much of your stress.
