Laundry Day Tips

Stack of colorful tee shirts fresh from the laundry

Apartments at Hillside Commons come with a full-sized washer and dryer for each resident’s convenience. Make the most of yours by making a few changes to your habits to solve common laundry problems for a less stressful laundry day here in Oneonta, NY. We’ve got some ideas to help you out.

Manage your time.

As with anything, if you make time for it, you can get it taken care of in a way that works for you. If you prefer to do laundry throughout the entire day when you have free time, block out your schedule for that and do other chores while you wait for the machine to run. If you prefer (or need!) to do a load every day, make it a part of your schedule so folding and putting things away actually gets accomplished. Enlist help from roommates if you need!

Pre-treat your items.

This is a given, but it’s easy to dismiss as unimportant. But you don’t have to bear with a stain staying around on a forever-ruined piece of clothing if you treat the stain as soon as possible. First, remove the foreign substance. Then wipe or dab at the stain with a cloth soaked in cold water. Then wash with soap or a stain remover, including an option from this Stain Solutions Guide.

Treat your items as soon as possible — at the very least, right when you put the item in the hamper — and sort your clothes in baskets or bags with items that require similar care.

Get a bag for your socks.

If you’ve ever lost a sock in the laundry, think about using a mesh lingerie bag. These make it easy to keep all your socks in one place. Just put the socks inside the bag and toss it into the washer and dryer. Then you don’t have to worry about sorting through the clean clothes looking for matching pairs.

Don’t stuff the machine.

As tempting as it may be to fit just one more item into the washer, this can actually add up fast and lead to overstuffing, which traps dirt in your clothes and leads to a less thorough wash. Instead, give your things room to get clean by splitting up your loads and going for another wash.

We hope these tips will help you have a successful laundry day! Thanks for reading our post.
