Scary Reads for Halloween

Halloween pop-up book
Adventure, action, and romance all make for a great story, but at this time of year that’s not always what people are in the mood for. This is the time of the year to get scared silly. Scary movies, haunted houses, or spooky stories told around a campfire can accomplish that. But when you’re home alone at night, one of the best ways to creep yourself out is with a horror novel.

Now, when people think about horror, they often think about slasher films or Stephen King. While those are great, there are a whole host of other options out there. We’ve gathered a few excellent horror novels for you to try. Curl up in your apartment at Hillside Commons with a warm drink and a tasty snack and give one of these great books a read.

The Rats in the Walls by H.P. Lovecraft

“H.P. Lovecraft’s classic tale of horror, madness, and historic cannibalism. Following the death of his son, a Massachusetts man returns to his family’s ancestral home in England. There, he is haunted by the sound of rats scurrying behind the castle walls. Ultimately, he discovers a terrible subterranean secret of his family’s past.”

I Am Not a Serial Killer by Dan Wells

John Wayne Cleaver isn’t like other teenagers; he is a sociopath with all the tendencies that are used to predict serial killer behavior. John doesn’t want to become a serial killer, so he lives by a set of strict rules to control his impulses. But one day a body is found in his little town; and when that body is delivered to the mortuary that John’s family runs, he realizes that there’s something wrong with it — there’s a piece missing. And John knows that it had to have been taken by a serial killer.
